    Gaming loot boxes: Understanding their legality and impact on the online gaming industry

    Unlike a pirate treasure chest, gaming loot boxes cannot be robbed. One needs to earn them – either by devoting in-game time or by spending real-world currency.

    But what happens if you spend 500 bucks buying a virtual loot box (anticipating to unlock a rare weapon), and all you get is a new t-shirt for your avatar. Would you be disappointed? Are loot boxes a game of chance within a game of skill? Belgium and Netherlands agree. UK, on the other hand, regards loot boxes as having no real-world value outside the virtual game, and hence does not treat games with loot boxes as games of chance. India is yet to have a legal stance on the issue.
