Digital Games, Violence and the Freedom of Expression

Digital games qualify as ‘art’ and should allow the game developers the freedom of speech and expression. But, should players be permitted to engage in racist, sexist, or otherwise problematic speech, during tournaments that are sometimes broadcast to audiences around the world. Earlier, game developers had been lax in enforcing clear standards of behaviour for fear of losing their traditional user base. Recognising these problems, developers like EA and Microsoft are taking measures to fight against online abuse by community engagement as well as stricter codes of conduct. We hope other developers soon follow suit. Without a self-regulatory body like the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (US), digital games in India run the risk of being burdened with onerous content-based regulations.
